On 14 and 15 April, Rector Marina Brambilla represented the University of Milan at the annual Presidential Summit of U7+, an international alliance of 48 higher education institutions. The event was hosted in Paris by Sciences Po, Université Paris Cité and École Polytechnique.

The U7+ Alliance was created during the 2019 G7 Summit in Biarritz on the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron, and has constantly worked in parallel with the G7 forum ever since. This year's U7+ Presidential Summit was held in France, the same country that will host the G7 Summit from 15 to 17 June. It was officially recognised as a G7 side event, and President Macron also included U7+ among the G7 Engagement Groups.

The U7+ Summit opened with an early morning meeting at the Palais de l'Élysée, where President Macron welcomed representatives from the U7+ Presidential Steering Committee, including Rector Marina Brambilla for the University of Milan. During the meeting with Macron, the U7+ Alliance presented its Communiqué "The Social Role of Universities in a Divided World", signed by over 30 U7+ university presidents.

Indeed, the role of higher education institutions in today's society was at the core of the U7+ Summit in Paris. The Summit brought together 31 member university presidents and their delegates to discuss crucial topics for science, higher education, multilateralism, climate action, and the future of the Alliance. Our Rector Marina Brambilla actively participated in the Summit together with Vice-Rector for Internationalisation Paola Catenaccio.

"It was very important for us to be able to meet and discuss with representatives from other international universities, and to do so in such an authoritative and prestigious framework", said Rector Brambilla. "Reflecting on the role of universities in a divided world — as in the title of the Summit's Communiqué — is a huge source of inspiration and encouragement for the University of Milan. Once again, we had proof of how crucial it is for our University to actively participate in international networks like U7+, to contribute to strengthening the role of universities in promoting democracy, cooperation and diplomacy in partnership with national governments."

The full text of the Communiqué is available on this page, as well as on the U7+ website.
