The University of Milan celebrates its first 4EU+ graduates.

They defended their thesis at the University of Milan, but attended classes and laboratories in at least two universities of the 4EU+ European University Alliance: we are talking about the first seven students to graduate from the 4EU+ joint master's programmes Migration Studies and New Societies and Global Environment and Development. Their names are Marta Troiano and Giorgia Cini (Migration Studies and New Societies), Victoria Rose Christensen, Kondi Julien Gbandi, Cristina Marìn de Agustìn, Genesis Luisana Romero Zambrano and Ayesha Siddika (Global Environment and Development — MERGED).

These first "4EU+ graduates" represent an important milestone towards building one comprehensive research-intensive European university, the interuniversity campus envisioned by the 4EU+ Alliance. In fact, the launch of new joint programmes spanning across Europe is one of the core goals of the 4EU+ strategy

Migration Studies and New Societies is the first joint master's degree of the University of Milan. Upon completion of the programme, students earn a single diploma, awarded jointly by three 4EU+ higher education institutions: the University of Milan, Charles University of Prague and the University of Warsaw. By spending one semester in each of those three universities, students receive a stronger, interdisciplinary and international education, and learn to analyse the various aspects of migration processes in a global perspective.

Global Environment and Development (MERGED) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, a degree programme of excellence delivered cooperatively by three 4EU+ members: the University of Copenhagen, the University of Milan and the University of Warsaw. MERGED students attend their first-year courses in Copenhagen, and then their second year either in Warsaw or Milan, depending on their chosen specialisation — Agricultural Development for those coming to Milan. Many of them also end up winning a prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

Another 4EU+ Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, European Environmental Economics and Policy (M3EP), is scheduled to start in September.

"It was a privilege for me to inaugurate the master's degree in Migration Studies and New Societies. The programme itself was an exciting journey", said Marta Troiano. "My experience in Milan, Warsaw and Prague taught me to look at migrations with open eyes and an open mind, weaving together diverse knowledge, perspectives and cultures. This programme provided me with the foundations to contribute, in an informed and competent way, to the ever-changing societies ahead of us".

Giorgia Cini commented: "From my master's in Migration Studies and New Societies, I take with me a deep understanding of the global dynamics that are linked to human mobility. This programme provided me with interdisciplinary tools to analyse migrations critically, enabling me to address complex challenges with a focus on the protection of human rights. This solid foundation will steer my contribution to research and project development on migration-related topics".

This is how Ayesha Siddika, master's graduate in Global Environment and Development (MERGED), recounted her experience: "Studying in Copenhagen and Milan, and doing fieldwork with an indigenous Borneo tribe in Malaysia, opened my eyes to how deeply the environment is connected to people's lives. Coming from an agricultural background, I became more aware of a person's carbon footprint on the planet and the urgency of sustainability. My thesis on halophytic bacteria deepened my passion for microbiology and helped me broaden my knowledge for my future studies. Over the past two years, I met amazing teachers, mentors, and friends for life, and tasted incredible food along the way! MERGED made my dream of travelling across Europe come true. It shaped my values, broadened my horizons, and prepared me for my PhD at Texas Tech University".
